Progress of scientific thought as a Tube map

Crispian Jago has created a delightful map of the history of scientific thought, superimposed on the iconic London Underground tube-map: "500 years of modern science, reason & critical thinking via the medium of gross oversimplification, dodgy demarcation, glaring omission and a very tiny font."

The Facts In The Case Of Dr. Andrew Wakefield

A very good way of explaining the daftness of the anti-MMR movement: do it comic-style. Link leads to full story.

The danger of science denial

This TED talk by a staff writer on the New Yorker is a perfect takedown of my sceptical bugbears: people who trust anecdotal evidence to support anti-science views; people who are intent on putting the brakes on scientific progress; and people who are so blind to evidence that they're content to let hundreds of thousands of people die.

Jimmy Carr hijacks an ad break

I missed this on Monday, but what a cracking idea: to hijack the real ads during C4's Comedy Gala, showing the brands/agencies as good sports. Of course, the mickey taking is on the gentle side but at least the GoCompare guy experienced some pain...

Embrace Life

Road safety videos are frequently grim affairs notable for either their gleeful goriness or preachy paternalism. This one rises above that sorry heap by pressing the right emotional buttons without any of the nasty stuff. I'd even dare say it's elegant.

Just what the year needs: a ZZ-Top guy with a machine gun and wings

The trouble with car advertising is the intrinsic nature of the product. It’s a box with 4 wheels. Recognising that such an object (that most of us encounter in volumes in hundreds or thousands every day) is not interesting, ad agencies have tried to show cars do improbable things like swing off cranes, breakdance and turn into submarines. Frankly, this approach is shit.

My fancy little directory fails to identify the agency behind the new ad for the Seat Ibiza which is a pity because 2010 begins with that near-impossible feat: a car ad that’s different and good.

The best thing about it is that it doesn’t show off the car.

No sticky-knickered alpha males.

No challenging geography.

No shine porn.

In fact, it’s easy to miss the car as the focus is on the emotion the car supposedly stimulates in those who encounter it. Top this with gorgeous art direction delivered with cheeky humour and we have a lovely ad for a product which might otherwise be just a well-polished turd.

Your Inner Fish

In Your Inner Fish, Neil Shubin tells the story of evolution by tracing the organs of the human body back millions of years, long before the first creatures walked the earth. By examining fossils and DNA, Shubin shows us that our hands actually resemble fish fins, our head is organized like that of a long-extinct jawless fish, and major parts of our genome look and function like those of worms and bacteria. We have compiled the figures from the book into a deck of PowerPoint slides for use in the classroom.

I don't know when I'd be inclined to use these, but they are wonderful Powerpoint slides illustrating evolutionary evidence.

Another by-the-numbers lingerie ad? Not quite

Yeah yeah, another sexy lingerie ad, but I didn't expect this ending.

We've got some work to do

Words cannot express the joyful geekgasm that this gleeful mashup of zombies + Scooby Doo inflicts. Some exquisite touches here, such as the heart-shaped tribute to the lost members of Mystery, Inc. and the chainsaw-compatible slot in the renamed Misery Machine.

Next on my wish list: Penelope Pitstop.

This is why they shaved the monkey's bum

Check out this ad currently on British telly. Note the soundtrack and the tagline.

Just sayin'.

Finnair’s faster; fool falters for fail

Finnair’s current TV campaign is simple, daft and ephemeral and a cheerful contrast to the brash ads generated by the big carriers. I can’t even find the agency responsible in the ALF agency bible, which could point towards this being an in-house job. The dancing numpty could pass off as Tony Blair’s runt nephew.

Nothing soft gets in

This example of brilliant Toyota advertising from Australia makes me envious. It ticks too many un-PC boxes to pass for UK viewing, for the win.

There's soft, and there's too soft

Bravo to O&M Thailand for wittily highlighting this fabric softener's primary benefit. I wonder whether this would work in a hard water area.
